SENG302 Project 2021

Product: WASTELESS

The SENG302 project for 2021 involved the creation of an application where stores can advertise any product that they are about to throw out at a reduced cost to the public. The primary purpose of this application is to reduce the amount of wastage.

Even though our primary focus is to reduce food wastage, several different products could also be sold through this application. For example, some cleaning products, gardening supplies, vitamins, pet supplies, and any other products that lose their potency over time could be sold through this application. Stores often attempt to get rid of their end-of-line products by having a sale however, the unsold items are often thrown out. This application is aimed to help with that.

Currently, there are stores in NZ and around the world that sell reduced products (e.g. Reduced to Clear), however we want an application that is available on the web with additional functionality.

In this project, each team created an application that supported the needs of both business and individuals. Features supporting business users included profile creation, product & inventory management, and listing discounted items for sale. In addition to browsing and purchasing items listed for sale, individual users can access a marketplace where they can buy, sell or exchange goods – bringing WASTELESS’ goal to everyone. In addition, each application has its own distinctive style and features.

Working in a team to develop a piece of working, usable, and useful software is difficult. Doing this with a set of evolving requirements, even though realistic, makes it even more challenging.

Students gained valuable experience with a range of industry-standard tools and techniques as well as working within a modern software process.

From a common basis with a restrictive set of user requirements, the ten teams delivered very different and interesting pieces of software. Students learnt how to develop a professional product and add their own touch by proposing user stories depending on potential specific audience requirements.
